Watford/ Wembley, May 2008
In May 2008 a strange, unthinkable thing happened. Hull City went to Wembley after narrowly missing out on automatic promotion ( fortunately ) The rest, as they say is history and confined to the memory banks. Our memoirs are below which should ring a few bells:
  • Jon H's car picnic - well done Sir!
  • 'Dooming'
  • Arrival in Watford via "scenic route" of Watford High Street....deciding it was a dump within 200 yards
  • Arrival at Hotel to be greeted by already flying City flags
  • Hotel bar, full of Tigers already
  • Heading into Watford to have suspicions of dump truly confirmed
  • The worst pint in the world in possibly the worst pub in the world
  • "Singing" in Curry House - quite surreal really - fuelled by 660 ml bottles of Cobra (which don't fit in a pint glass, do they Briggsy?) but perhaps the best curryhouse in the world?
  • Telling Skateboarders that they really should be in bed at 2am, the knobheads
  • The rotating dancefloor
  • Cans in hotel lobby before bed
  • Ede going for a p*ss, never to return
  • The mass of Black and Amber at Breakfast
  • The painful process of getting 12 lads together to leave Hotel
  • Immodium plus
  • Big Marts mystifying decision to seek a toilet, 2 seconds before train arrives
  • Strange Feeling in stomach at train station at announcement of "Wembley Stadium"
  • Deciding Wembley was a bigger dump than Watford....if it wasn't for the stadium, no-one would ever visit surely?
  • The man in the pink hat who sang insults to us
  • "Go on, have a Cider, Go on!"
  • Moving up Wembley High Street 10 yards at a time before another seemingly pointless pause ( cashpoint, burgers etc )
  • Finally clapping eyes on the Stadium - it has to be said, its bloody impressive.
  • Driffield Tigers outside Hotel in Wembley
  • £30 for 24 Fosters - wrong, surely?
  • Barry Greenlaw and that other teacher bird. Fitter now than then? ( not Barry )
  • Chatting with Bristolians and deciding footy is truly ace
  • Wembley Way....completely unforgettable....a true sea of Black and Amber and huge great big smiles.
  • Dave Rugg with those glasses
  • The Bristol sports report getting 'mauled'
  • Going in to ground, finally fulfilling many many dreams - at this point, these reports generally end right now.........not so today my friends......
  • Going to seats on escalators
  • Going in to Wembley stand at 1.30pm....it took my breath away empty
  • Going in to Wembley stand at 2.30pm....it made me cry full
  • The glamour and glitz of everything pre kick off - I want a Zeppelin.
  • Kick Off - terrified.  An unending barrage of White Noise (or rather Black and Amber noise)
  • 3.38 pm 24 May 2008 - Deano re-writes history - surely the greatest goal ever to be scored at Wembley - (sorry but F**k Off G Hurst) - utter carnage ensues until half time.
  • 3 free kicks on edge of area and numerous missed Brizzle chances
  • 4.45pm 24 May 2008 - the loudest five minutes of ear splitting whistling begins
  • 4.50 pm 24 May 2008 - Mr Wiley finally finally blows his whistle - to send the Black and Amber faithful and the gloryhunters into oblivion and beyond - the feeling of utter utter unadulterated joy.
  • Tears ( come on own up, it's not girly to cry under these circumstances)
  • Ash lifts the trophy
  • That long run and dive manoeuvre - quality - although noted that Browny didn't go full length in suit
  • Hi-ho Silver lining, Rocking all over the World, Wise Men - music by Sydney Scarborough/ Grinsteads circa 1982?
  • Rob Brigham getting interviewed/tongue - tied on TV cam
  • said interview 'snippet' being shown on Sky Sports news with Driff Tigers in background
  • Glory hunting Hull kid on way home asking if that meant Hull had won the Championship
  • I could go on and i will have missed bits out, but I think its fair to say that this was without doubt the greatest footballing day EVER...I could attend a game a day for the rest of my life, but nothing will ever ever compare to that....it will never be the first time at Wembley again, it will never be the first goal at Wembley again, it will never be the first time in The Premiership again...I was and still am completely flabbergasted at the entire day, which was simply perfect.
  • HULL CITY AFC I SALUTE YOU !!!!!!!!!!!
many thanks, Mr Edeson ( added to by webmaster )

more on the day....
